Why Do You Need Digital?

The equestrian industry is still very traditional – particularly among smaller businesses. Marketing is generally in the form of word-of-mouth, print, a small website and / or possibly some social media. Whilst these are all valid and often effective marketing options, they are limited.

Print advertising can be expensive and it relies on people actually going somewhere to pick up a leaflet or magazine or subscribing to a magazine and then actually looking at the adverts. Word-of-mouth is also quite restrictive as it generally only reaches people within the social circles of your existing customers. Social media, when done properly, can be very effective. Some businesses even use social media instead of having a website because it’s cheaper and easier to set up and manage.

However, when people search for products and services, the first place they go is usually Google. To get your website seen on Google, you will want to be on the first page, ideally at or close to the top. There are two ways of doing this:

  1. Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) – This is where your website is managed in such a way that it will show up when people search for certain keywords. These may be phrases such as “riding school near me” or “equine vet Oxfordshire” etc. Depending on how well your website is optimised, it will be shown higher or lower in the search results.
  2. Google Ads (pay-per-click / PPC) – This is when you can pay to have your website shown either at the top or bottom of the first page in Google. The way it works is you create a campaign to target certain keywords, and depending on how competitive those keywords are, you will pay a certain amount every time someone clicks on your Ad.
SEO, PPC or a New Website?

Which service(s) you have will depend on your current situation, your budget and how quickly you want to see results.

The first thing to check is whether you have a website and how effective it is. If you don’t yet have a website, you will need one before you can do SEO or Google Ads. If you already have a website, it needs to be functioning properly, have a fast load speed and contain all the information your customers will be looking for. Once these things are in place, you can begin to look into SEO and PPC.

Neither service is better than the other, but one may be a better option for certain businesses at particular times.

SEO is a good option if your website is basically functioning but needs more work to make it work for your business long-term. Although we do offer one-off SEO services, it is generally better to go for a monthly management service if you can. This will give you better results over the long-term.

One-off SEO optimisation is good if you just need a bit of a top-up or a refresh, or you have just had your website built and have done no SEO. It is also more affordable than signing into a contract.

PPC tends to deliver faster results and can be a short-term option, but it can be more expensive because you will need to allow for setup and management fees as well as your Google Ads budget.

It’s worth noting that although SEO is slower to have an effect, it is also slower to deteriorate if it is left. Google Ads, on the other hand, will cease immediately when you switch them off.

Plenty of businesses will opt for SEO and PPC at the same time. This gives your business the short-term rocket launch to the top of Google as well as building the foundations for longer-term success with Google Search. Feel free to book a consultation to discuss your requirements and I can help you decide which option would be best for your business.
